The History of Ladd Landing

On October 7, 1653, John Ladd landed in Virginia and resided on the Clayton’s Plantation at
the curls of the James River in Richmond, Virginia for four generations. Then John C. Ladd, the
sixth generation Ladd, settled in Roane County in 1813. The Ladd family farm was located near other property which John C. Ladd’s grandson, William B. Ladd, purchased starting in the early 1920’s. The original Ladd family farm and most of the other real estate purchased by William B. Ladd comprises the development know today as Ladd Landing.

The name Ladd Landing was the name the Ladd’s gave to a landing area on the Clinch River. The ownership of most Ladd property was maintained by William’s daughter, Mildred Ladd Delaney and son, Hu E. Ladd for nearly fifty years following William’s death.
This stewardship of the Ladd family heritage has made it possible for Mrs. Delaney, her daughter and son, to partner with developer Matt Caldwell and architect E. Bowden Wyatt, to create a unique new community which combines the best of the past with that of the present. Mrs. Delaney has expressed the Ladd families’ hopes for Ladd Landing by saying, “Just as this place has nurtured and anchored my family for generations, it is my hope it will one day provide such a place for families from all across this country and beyond.”
